Recent scientific investigation has shown that addictions of all sorts have similar causes and need similar kinds of treatment. Other studies have found that certain intervention techniques are particularly effective. Some, such as 12-step participation, are time-tested and supported by the testimony of addicts who are experiencing successful recoveries. Others, including cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic interventions, have been supported in recent clinical trials. Path of Hope practitioners integrate the these proven approaches to provide evidence-based, effective outpatient treatment to persons suffering from additions, as well as to their families.
Consistent with the findings of research, persons who are addicted to different substances or behaviors have many similarities. Their brains produce the same addiction-fueling chemicals and structural changes as their addiction grows. They experience similar cycles of obsession, ritualistic preparation, compulsive behavior, and emotional devastation. The devastation grows beyond personal mental and emotional destruction, expanding to ravage families, jobs, and friendships. Despite the ruinous downward spiral, many persist their addictive behavior until jobs are lost, families are shattered, and friendships are abandoned.
The similarities between the addictions allow experts to use similar strategies in shaping their interventions. Changes in thinking, behavioral, and social support provide a foundation for recovery. Family and couples therapies promote changes in the dysfunctional patterns that have often unintentionally supported the additions. Spiritual development is supported and encouraged to promote well-rounded psychological health. These powerful, evidence-based approaches are described in greater detail in the other pages of this site.
